New Professional Organization Established to Serve as Voice of Staffing and Recruiting Industry in Mississippi

The American Staffing Association has formed the ASA Mississippi Council to advance the staffing, recruiting, and workforce solutions industry in the state and surrounding region to the benefit of members, job seekers, businesses, and the economy.

ASA councils are new regional- and state-level organizations of member companies committed to advancing the interests of the industry. The ASA Mississippi Council serves as the voice of the staffing industry in communicating with local legislators, regulators, news media, businesses, employees, and community leaders. While identifying with the mission of ASA, the council provides local professional networking and educational opportunities for industry professionals, and establishes a constituency group to advocate for the industry regarding any state or local staffing-related legislation.

The ASA Mississippi Council held its first meeting on Feb. 11. Participants heard from Shawn Mackey, associate executive director of the Mississippi Community College Board; Tim Rush, director of the Office of Reemployment Assistance; Robert Freeman, area director with the Office of Job Connections; and James Williams, executive director of the State Workforce Development Board. The panel delved into the organizations’ initiatives for the year, and how staffing, recruiting, and workforce solutions companies and industry suppliers can play an active part in putting Mississippians to work. Ed Lenz, ASA senior counsel, also presented an update on the Affordable Care Act and detailed compliance requirements for 2016.

“The ASA Mississippi Council Symposium was a phenomenal event to kick off this new professional organization,” said Brad Bounds, CSP, ASA Mississippi Council chairman. “More than 30 of the staffing industry’s key leaders from Mississippi and surrounding states attended the symposium to gain valuable insight from the speakers, as well as to network and share information and best practices.”
