Index Up 5.6% Compared to Same Week in 2025
ASA Staffing Index Monthly Report, June 2026
Staffing employment edged up during the week of June 8–14, with the ASA Staffing Index increasing by 0.3% while holding at rounded value of 89. Staffing jobs were 5.6% higher compared with the same period last year, up from 5.2% recorded the previous week.
New starts, however, decreased during the 24th week of the year, down 6.3% from the prior week. Three in 10 staffing companies (30%) reported gains in new assignments week to week, below the average of 41% so far in 2026.
The ASA Staffing Index four-week moving average improved from the previous week to a rounded value of 89. Temporary and contract staffing employment for the four weeks ending June 14 was 5.3% higher than during the same period in 2025. Compared with the May monthly report, staffing employment grew by about 1.6%.
“Weekly staffing employment continues to see year-to-year gains, even as economic headwinds challenge overall labor demand, said Noah Yosif, chief economist at ASA. “The need for temporary and contract solutions among cost-constrained employers continues to rise as clients gradually shed their reluctance to hire.”
This week will be used in the June monthly employment situation report scheduled to be issued by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics on July 2.
The ASA Staffing Index is reported nine days after each workweek, making it a near real-time measure of staffing employment trends. ASA Staffing Starts are the number of temporary and contract employees placed in new assignments during the reporting week. ASA research shows that staffing employment has historically been a coincident economic indicator.
