Submit your PowerPoint presentation and additional resources to ASA (S***********@americanstaffing.net) no later than Aug. 31.
Submit your PowerPoint presentation slides in Widescreen (16:9) format. The next few sections below contain tips, template suggestions, and more.
Staffing World attendees have the option to download and print slides and handouts prior to coming to your workshop (in PDF form). They will also have the option to view the slides on-site in the Staffing World App or the Staffing World Materials website: staffingworld.net/materials2018.
If you are a solo presenter, please submit your PowerPoint slides and any other materials for participants to access electronically, by Aug. 31, so that they can be reviewed for style and grammar, not for content and uploaded to the Staffing World website.
If you are facilitating or participating on a panel, planning calls will be scheduled to coordinate the group's content, slide, and handouts. Panel slides are also due to ASA by Aug. 31. If you are not aware of your scheduled call or next steps, email S***********@americanstaffing.net.
-
ASA encourages your use of video, polling, and other interactive elements in your workshop.
Video:
Please embed video(s) in your PowerPoint presentation. Send the video and PowerPoint files to ASA via this Dropbox link.
Polling:
ASA will provide live polling software for Staffing World workshops. If you would like to include live polling in your workshop, please send (with your PowerPoint slide deck) the multiple-choice questions and what slide the polling question should follow. ASA will follow up with presenters who request polling.
-
The number of attendees in your session is expected to be between 75 and 150. Attendees range in age from early 30s to late 60s, with the majority of attendees in their 40s. The attendees will be split evenly between males and females. ASA is promoting the convention to independent, regional, and national staffing companies; direct hire firms; and industry suppliers.
Please incorporate learner interaction throughout—no one wants to sit and listen for a full class. We all learn by doing, by solving challenges, by discussion. Design your content starting off with a challenge—a scenario or an activity. You want the learners to take action; to help them influence a behavior change based on the knowledge you are sharing.
Leave time to answer attendees’ questions at the end of your presentation. If there is no microphone present for attendees to speak into, repeat any questions asked into your microphone so it can be heard on the recording.
Display a high level of energy during your session—the audience will feed off your energy, leading to a more interactive workshop.
You may be familiar with TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design), a series of conferences
organized by the nonprofit Sapling Foundation to disseminate “ideas worth spreading.” These are the commandments that TED organizers share with their presenters:- Thou shalt not simply trot out thy usual shtick.
- Thou shalt dream a great dream, or show forth a wondrous new thing, or share something thou hast never shared before.
- Thou shalt reveal thy curiosity and thy passion.
- Thou shalt tell a story.
- Thou shalt freely comment on the utterances of other speakers for the sake of blessed connection and exquisite controversy.
- Thou shalt not flaunt thine ego. Be thou vulnerable. Speak of thy failure as well as thy success.
- Thou shalt not sell from the stage: neither thy company, thy goods, thy writings, nor thy desperate need for funding; lest thou be cast aside into outer darkness.
- Thou shalt remember all the while: Laughter is good.
- Thou shalt not read thy speech.
- Thou shalt not steal the time of them that follow thee
ASA would like to offer a few additional commandments:
- Thou shalt not read thy slides aloud.
- Thou shalt encourage participation.
- Thou shalt manage participation, but not taketh from the learners' experience.
- Thou shalt repeat the questions that are asked of thee for recording purposes.
It’s OK not to have slides—SLIDES ARE NOT YOUR PRESENTATION, your content is!
ASA provides space for note-taking in the conference program. If your content will be enhanced by providing slides…
-
- Remember: The slides are NOT YOUR PRESENTATION
- Some experts have cautioned against "Death by PowerPoint," explaining that it's most effective to use slides to complement the transfer of knowledge or to demonstrate key points. Don't make your slides the sole focus of your presentation. In fact, it might help if you cover the screen when the slides aren't necessary so participants can focus on you and what you are saying. (Since you are not going to be reading your slides, you don't need them up either, right?)
- If there is an activity, provide instructions both in writing and orally to ensure understanding.
- It's a good idea to include slides in your presentation that highlight the immediate takeaways-a summary of actions the attendees can take or processes they can implement soon after the convention. For example, you might say, "Let's pause and think about what I have shared with you so far-and how you can implement that strategy or idea in your company tomorrow." Then show a slide with two or three takeaway items. ASA recommends that you do this at least twice during your presentation.
- Leave ample time for questions and interaction during your session.
- Your PowerPoint slides can be on your company template. ASA will add a title slide and closing slide, on the ASA template, to your presentation. Please use 16:9 (widescreen) format.
- Add your contact information to your final slide.
- Your PowerPoint presentation should be created using Microsoft PowerPoint. If you are using a different software program, contact Chris Weirs to make sure ASA can work with the format.
- Your PowerPoint slides also will be formatted as handouts and distributed electronically to attendees: three to a page, with space for notes. Please limit the words and graphics on your slides so that they are legible when printed.

Submit a short video that introduces you and your workshop to the ASA audience—and help continue building the buzz and excitement for Staffing World.
The video should be about 30 seconds long, and any video format/file is acceptable. Make sure the video is well lit and that the camera is close enough for viewers to see your face clearly. A good rule of thumb is a shot that frames your head and shoulders. The video should be one continuous take (no edits).
- Start your video clip by introducing yourself and your workshop. For example:
- Hello. I'm Christopher Weirs, and I am presenting a workshop at Staffing World this year called [Name of workshop]. we will discuss/focus on/talk about [name two or three things you are targeting in your workshop] and explore [mention one or two results/strategies/solutions they will walk away with]. Check out the full workshop description at staffingworld.net-I look forward to seeing all of you in October!
- You should be dressed professionally in your video clip and in a professional setting. Please refrain from wearing hats, t-shirts, etc., and please refrain from endorsing your company, your company's services, or other organizations.
- When you're done with your video, click on this Dropbox link to upload your video to the ASA Dropbox account.
