Index Up 4.2% Compared With Same Week in 2024
ASA Staffing Index Monthly Report, December 2025
Staffing employment increased during the week of Dec. 8–14, with the ASA Staffing Index growing by 0.9% to a rounded value of 92. Staffing companies cited no one primary factor that hindered growth. Staffing jobs were 4.2% higher compared with the same period last year, up from 3.6% recorded the previous week.
New starts also edged up in the 50th week of the year, up by 3.0% from the prior week. Four in 10 staffing companies (42%) reported gains in new assignments week to week, equal to the average this year.
The ASA Staffing Index four-week moving average inched down from the previous week while holding at a rounded value of 91. Temporary and contract staffing employment for the four weeks ending Dec. 14 was 3.7% higher than during the same period in 2024.
“As 2025 draws to a close, the growth the index has recorded has settled into a steady trend upward,” said Noah Yosif, chief economist at ASA. “Although the next year brings continued challenges, the industry at least has a somewhat higher platform to build from compared with the end of 2024.”
The ASA Staffing Index is reported nine days after each workweek, making it a near real-time measure of staffing employment trends. ASA Staffing Starts are the number of temporary and contract employees placed in new assignments during the reporting week. ASA research shows that staffing employment has historically been a coincident economic indicator.
This week will be used in the December monthly employment situation report scheduled to be issued by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Jan. 9, 2026.
