ASA Staffing Index Monthly Report, February 2018

Staffing employment for the week of Feb. 12–18 edged down 0.4%, but remained at a rounded value of 94 for the fourth straight week, according to the ASA Staffing Index. Despite the slight decline, the week of Feb. 12–18—which included the Presidents Day holiday weekend—matched the highest level for the same week since the inception of the index in 2006. Staffing employment was 0.7% higher than the same week last year, which also included Presidents Day weekend.

This week, containing the 12th, will be used in the February monthly employment situation report that will be issued by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics on March 9.

The ASA Staffing Index four-week moving average increased for the fourth consecutive period to a rounded figure of 94, and was 0.7% higher year-to-year. Staffing employment for the four weeks ending Feb. 18 had the fastest rate of growth for the same period since 2010.

The ASA Staffing Index is reported nine days after each workweek, making it a near real-time measure of staffing employment trends. ASA Staffing Starts are the number of temporary and contract employees placed in new assignments during the reporting week. ASA research shows that staffing employment has historically been a coincident economic indicator.
