Citing the disproportionate rate at which temporary workers are seriously or fatally injured in workplace accidents, the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration launched its Temporary Worker Initiative in April 2013. Three years in, the initiative has taken root, and its effect on the staffing industry is undeniable. Increasingly, staffing companies find themselves involved in OSHA inspections of their clients’ work sites and, in turn, on the receiving end of OSHA citations.
Most staffing companies take the safety and health of the temporary employees they send to client sites seriously, but meeting OSHA’s compliance mandate requires more; it requires thoughtful planning, collaboration with clients, robust policies and procedures, and regular follow-up at client work sites where temporary workers are assigned.
